Fathers and Sons, 2016

Families play a crucial role in children’s development, acting as a primary experience for their socialization. While mothers have their unique importance for sons, fathers play an integral role as models for their son’s psychological and social development. The photo series focuses on different generations of fathers and sons – fathers as old as 80 and sons as young as seven. The portraits feature fathers and sons in their German homes, exploring to what extent their sons either accept or reject core values that were passed on by their fathers. The viewer is left to find similarities and differences, to visually trace the cultural inheritance that these fathers may have successfully transferred to their male progeny.
